The Meyers Manx

When you think of American hot-rodding, the Meyers Manx probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The brainchild of Southern California surfer, Bruce Meyers, the Manx formula is putting a great looking fiberglass body over a dune buggy with VW running gear. The original intent was to give people a kit where they could build a little piece of surf culture in their garage with their own hands. You build it yourself and you add whatever flavor you want to it. That’s the essence of hot-rodding. The Manx started off as a design success because it looked cool and then continued to be popular because they also worked awesome for desert racing and autocross. What a cool little nugget of American car culture.

Jay Leno’s 1981 Honda CBX

This is a kind of special episode of Jay Leno’s garage because this week they feature the first vehicle Jay ever bought new, the 1981 Honda CBX. The CBX is another classic that didn’t sell well when new but has since become a collector’s item. The inline-6 cylinder engine along with the air suspension made it a great sport tourer but those features also made it intimidatingly complicated. The inline-6 actually made a return to motorcycles this year on the BMW K-series sport tourerers. The natural balance of the configuration make is smooth and powerful for putting away a ton of miles on the highway. It’s pretty cool to see that Honda put together the same formula before the world was ready for it.

Art Morrison 1950 Chevrolet 3100

Big Muscle checks out the new daily driver of Craig Morrison of Art Morrison Enterprises, a 1950 Chevrolet 3100 series pickup truck. Craig bought the truck off the side of the road because it reminded him of the 1949 GMC that his grandfather used to drive him around in on the family farm. The chassis was replaced by a new Art Morrison GT Sport series complete bolt-in unit with a GM Performance Parts 353 converted to EFI. Art Morrison makes some of the best engineered chassis available evident by the fact that this truck can now handle better than a Corvette. The coolest part about the truck is that it performs well yet it’s not so nice that it can’t be driven everyday rain or shine.
