Road & Track Compares the Subaru BRZ, Mazda MX-5 and Hyundai Genesis

Not to be outdone by Motor Trend’s recent sub $28k sports car shootout, Road & Track rounded up the Subaru BRZ, Mazda MX-5 and Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 2.0 liter turbo engine for a rear wheel drive comparison. Watch the videos before you read my take on them:

As an added bonus they got 2011 Formula D Champion, Daijiro Yoshihara, to see which one he liked drifting the most.

I have yet to see the Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ lose a comparison yet. The real kicker is that everybody says that it could use more power, but still pick it to win. That just goes to show that Toyota/Subaru really got it right by going back to the basics of rear wheel drive, low center of gravity and light weight. I was very worried that these cars wouldn’t be received well simply because they didn’t make enough power for a modern audience, but it seems that people are actually appreciating the engineering effort that was put into matching the power with the tires, suspension and chassis to create a really high level of overall balance. Even so, it seems Toyota is thinking about covering the power issue.

Motor Trend Head 2 Head: Subaru BRZ vs. Ford Mustang V6

Kudos to Motor Trend for coming up with an interesting comparison on this one. Lets say you are in the market for a mid-range (under 30 thousand) new car with a warranty that is rear wheel drive, has a back seat and is sporty enough to do some autocrosses or track days on the weekend. The best candidates on your list would be the new Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ, Ford Mustang V6, Hyundai Genesis coupe and maybe the V6 Chevrolet Camaro. In reality, probably not too many people are going to cross-shop the two cars in this comparison, but they do belong in the same genre. As with the rest of the high quality FT-86 reviews, there is a lot of talk about being a balanced driver’s car vs. having power and the contrast with the Mustang illustrates it very well. Editor Angus Mackenzie drives both cars on some mountain roads and then they are turned over to Randy Pobst for a lap time around Streets of Willow.

Automobile Magazine Explains the Difference Between The Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ

Automobile Magazine just posted this review of the 2013 Scion FR-S. It’s pretty interesting because they do a good job explaining how the FR-S and the Subaru BRZ feel different based on how their respective companies tuned their suspensions. They also talk about where some improvements can be made to both cars. Head over to Automobile’s Site to read the whole article.
