Scion FR-S vs. Subaru BRZ on Track – Everyday Driver

These guys actually get what makes the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 special. Just about every other review of the cars are too vague. Yes, the car handles well and is balanced, but it goes beyond that. The way the car handles, thanks to the low center of gravity of the boxer engine, could almost be described as fundamentally different from all other FR cars with pistons that move vertically. I’m going to describe it in much more detail in my review of my friend’s BRZ that should go live later this week, but for now listen to what these guys are saying about how the cars handle. They notice a lot of the unique sensations that everybody else missed in their reviews. It’s also the best run down of how the different suspension tuning philosophies for the Scion and Subaru translate on track that I’ve seen so far.

1973 Bank Robber Chevelle – Big Muscle

For the finale of their first season, Big Muscle featured a pretty awesome 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle. Chances are it doesn’t look like what you picture in your mind’s eye at the mention of “Awesome Chevelle,” but that’s what makes it cool. My philosophy is that when you buy a project car/bike/machine, it needs to speak to the essence of who you are as a person. Something about the way it’s designed, assembled and performs gives it a soul that’s compatible with yours. As with all things in life, your projects will only make you unhappy if their motivation is the impressing of other people. That’s one of the cool perks of being a gearhead. It’s your own creative expression in the form of a mechanical device. The car featured in this video is a great example of the owner picking a car that wasn’t popular and turning it into what he wanted it to be. In this case it was built to be the perfect bank robbery get away car and a tribute to his great grandfather. I especially like the fact that he upgraded the tires ans suspension first and then did mild upgrades to complement the overall balance of the car. Not your typical muscle car and it’s way better for it.

Demon Energy Drift Trike World Championship

Welcome to the world of downhill drift trikes. These are custom made adult sized tricycles with heavy duty BMX or mountain bike front wheels and brakes paired with PVC pipe rear wheels. Red Bull sponsors a series called Slider Kings in Europe where they ride these down really long mountain roads. This footage is from New Zealand where they run their events like professional drifting events. These guys are given a defined course with clipping points and they’re slides are judged for speed and angle. Qualifying happens individually and then the competition runs are run in tandem just like the automotive equivalent. Looks like some serious fun.

**NSFW WARNING** The soundtrack to this video has bad language. Mute it if you need to.

Takahisa Fujinami – Trials Motocross

I never thought I’d see the day where I’m trying to figure what videos to post and I have footage of somebody whose skills are more impressive than Sebastien Loeb in a rally car, but that’s exactly what has happened. Meet Takahisa Fujinami, the first and only Japanese rider to win the Trials World Championship. This is sideline footage of him riding in the Japanese Grand Prix of the SPEA FIM trials championship in 2009. Some of the stuff he clears made my jaw drop and a most of it is terrain that I wouldn’t want to attempt on foot.
