Road & Track Compares the Subaru BRZ, Mazda MX-5 and Hyundai Genesis

Not to be outdone by Motor Trend’s recent sub $28k sports car shootout, Road & Track rounded up the Subaru BRZ, Mazda MX-5 and Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 2.0 liter turbo engine for a rear wheel drive comparison. Watch the videos before you read my take on them:

As an added bonus they got 2011 Formula D Champion, Daijiro Yoshihara, to see which one he liked drifting the most.

I have yet to see the Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ lose a comparison yet. The real kicker is that everybody says that it could use more power, but still pick it to win. That just goes to show that Toyota/Subaru really got it right by going back to the basics of rear wheel drive, low center of gravity and light weight. I was very worried that these cars wouldn’t be received well simply because they didn’t make enough power for a modern audience, but it seems that people are actually appreciating the engineering effort that was put into matching the power with the tires, suspension and chassis to create a really high level of overall balance. Even so, it seems Toyota is thinking about covering the power issue.

New Brammo Empulse R Commercial

Brammo just released this pretty sweet commercial for their Empulse R electric sport bike. This is how I think electric vehicle manufacturers should be approaching marketing. EV’s can be fun, cool, sexy and way better for the environment and economy at the same time. This commercial certainly turned out better than the photoshopped Pump Rebels hybrid car calendar.

Deegan vs. Deegan

Brian Deegan is currently racing trophy trucks in the Traxxis TORC series but he was also one of the founding members of the Metal Mulisha freestyle motocross team. One of his sponsors, Maxxis Tires, took advantage of Deegan’s multi-faceted off-road skills to make this neat video of him racing himself in his truck with his motocross bike. The fact that they can play on the same playground shows why a lot of motocross riders are finding success in offroad truck racing.

Take a Lap Around Monaco on Sebastian Vettel’s Helmet

Here’s an interesting video form a camera mounted to Sebastian Vettel’s helmet as he races around the streets of Monaco in his Formula 1 car. It kind of makes you appreciate just how difficult it is to pilot some of the fastest road racing cars on the planet. Either that or the Red Bull Racing team has a really terrible helmet cam mount.
