2012 Porsche Carrera vs. 2013 Porsche Boxster S

Porsche has really done a great job with the new 991 generation 911 and the all new Boxster. As Chris Harris pointed out in his review of the new Boxster, the performance gap between Porsche’s entry level car and their bread and butter 911 has become minutely small. The Boxster has sold well enough through the previous two generations that Porsche no longer blatantly neuters the car to protect 911 sales. That begs the question of exactly how large is the performance gap between the Boxster and the 911 now if it even still exists? Car and Driver’s European correspondent, Jethro Bovingdon, pits the two cars against each other. To make the comparison interesting, they test the fastest (S model with active suspension and torque vectoring differential) but still significantly cheaper Boxster vs. a bare bones 911 Carrera at the drag strip and at the very technical Landlow circuit. I won’t spoil the results, but the take away here is that Porsche is on the money with both cars having gained a massive performance boost with their redesigns.

2012 Morgan 3 Wheeler – Motor Trend

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago takes the funky Morgan 3 Wheeler out for a spin. It’s essentially a giant torpedo body powered by a big Harley Davidson style motor. You get theĀ opennessĀ of a motorcycle with a bit of vintage fighter plane swag. Carlos says he adores the car because it makes everybody happy. I don’t know. I can think of a lot of better ways to spend $45,000 on cars/motorcycles that actually handle well. Like it or hate it, the 3 Wheeler still makes for a fascinating review.

Pagani Huayra and Bugatti Veyron Vitesse Details – evo TV

Harry Metcalfe of evo is back with another car guy test. Metcalfe has a special relationship with Horacia Pagani that allows him to bring us some exclusive coverage of some of Pagani’s inner workings. This video from the annual Pagani gathering is no exception. The first half covers the finer details and driving nuances of the new Huayra. Harry says the Huayra is similar to a two-wheel drive Veyron and I guess he had to make sure because he spent the next day driving around in the new Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse roadster. Again, he walks us through the finer details of the car including some of the bits that he doesn’t like. There’s no crazy drifting or video editing so you will only find this interesting if you’re a real car geek.

Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster on the Mille Miglia – Motor Trend

The Motor Trend YouTube channel continues to impress me with how well they present truly interesting content. On this episode of Epic Drives, Angus Mackenzie pays tribute to fellow Brit Stirling Moss’s victory in the Mille Miglia in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. He drives some of the same roads in the car from the current Mercedes lineup that best resembles the car that Moss drove, the SLS Roadster. The video takes a look at both cars, the history and significance of the race and why Stirling Moss’s victory was so special. They even get Moss to drive the SLS for part of the course and interview him at the end. I do not envy the writer who has to follow this masterpiece on the next episode of Epic Drives.

The Lexus IS F – Toyota’s Turning Point?

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago gives us the rundown on the 2012 Lexus IS F. He explains the car’s significance in that it was Toyota’s first step back towards making performance oriented cars. He also goes on to articulate the IS F’s fun nature while noting the suspension and limited slip differential upgrades that make it a genuine competitor against the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.
