You can’t really go wrong with dirt track racing. It’s wheel to wheel action mixed with drifting and motorcycles. I think it’s enjoyable for the same reason rally racing is enjoyable: low traction means the fastest way around corners is controlled sliding. This is a video about the young gun of dirt track, Sammy Halbert. It starts with Sammy talking about how he’s involved in the sport and then it picks up with some awesome racing footage. One of the races is on an actual circuit instead of a plain oval. I point this out because there’s a section that includes a jump in the middle of a turn which results in air-drifting. The only other place in motorsport where you’ll see something like that is when the World Rally Championship runs the Urria stage in Rally Finland.

Katee Sackhoff’s Classified Moto KT600

Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica and Longmire on A&E just took delivery of her custom cafe racer built by Classified Moto of Richmond, VA. It started life as a 1987 Honda XL600R:

Which was heavily modified with a Honda CB350 tank, Kawasaki ZX-6R forks and a single sided swing arm from a Triumph Sprint ST among a host of other things to become what it is today. Katee wanted forward peg positions similar to what she has on her Harley, so Classified Moto didn’t move where they were stock on the dirt bike. Continue reading →

Greg Tracy’s Sub-10 Minute Run Up Pikes Peak 2012

This year saw two factory backed Ducati Multistrada 1200’s break the 10 minute barrier at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Ducati team chose to run the dual sport bikes even though the road surface was completely paved for the 2012 competition. The Multistrada engines are tuned for more torque to power out of the hairpins and the road surface is still pretty bumpy even though it’s been paved. Greg Tracy replied to one of the comments of this video saying that the upright seating position of the dual sport bikes are better at Pikes Peak because they allow you to adapt to changing conditions in turns faster. He went on to say that superbikes had too much weight committed to the front tire which can cause problems like we saw with the Yamaha R1. Tracy placed second in the motorcycle class with a 9’58.262″.

2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on a Yamaha R1

Here’s some exciting on-board footage from a Yamaha R1 racing up this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This particular rider posted a 11:02.201 which was good for 2nd in class, 4th fastest motorcycle and 14th overall. The overall motorcycle record was a 9:52.819 set by Carlin Dunne on a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. Even though the course was fully paved this year, Ducati still though the adventure bike had more benefits than an all out street bike. If I had to guess, I would say it probably has to do with acceleration torque coming out of the tight bends.
