Bonneville Lakesters at Pebble Beach

This is a video from Pebble Beach in 2010 where they honored some of the pioneers of Bonneville speed records of years past. One of the cars they look at is still the current record holder for flathead V8’s going 236 mph. The SoCal Speed Shot P38 belly tank car was also in attendance along with it’s builder. It’s definitely a cool look into an era of real American ingenuity that is still being carried on today.

Dogs in Cars

You may question how this is related to cars, but if you like dogs you won’t question how awesome this is. It’s some high definition video of dogs hanging their heads out of car windows. When I was in the fourth grade, my buddy told me that the reason dogs do that is because their noses are more sensitive to oxygen and it makes them high. Since this is a somewhat legitimate blog, I did some Googling to see if he was right. It turns out he was pretty close. Dogs hang their heads out of car windows not because the oxygen makes them high, but because they’re able to process all of the scent information contained in the air going by the car. Check out this article by K9 magazine for all of the details, or you can just watch these videos to see it happen.

If you like this sort of thing, then you really owe it to yourself to read a book called “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein:

The book uses race driving as an analogy for living life. It’s also interesting because it is narrated from the perspective of the race driver’s dog. It will definitely make you laugh and cry and you don’t even have to be into cars to enjoy it. Definitely my favorite book.

The Institution of the Bonneville Salt Flats by Motor Trend

Motor Trend just posted this great video about the Bonneville Salt Flats. What makes it interesting is that they give you a picture of the culture built by the racers that convene there every year. What they do is not racing in the traditional sense. The competition is not a cutthroat head to head to race. It’s more accurate to think of it as a competition of the people against the salt and the clock. You get a really good feel for the mentality of the racers from the interviews in the video.

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor on the Nurburgring

This is Tanner Foust on the Nurburgring in a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. I’m guessing this is a factory backed effort since Foust drives a Ford Fiesta rally/gymkhana car. That’s gotta take some balls to drive an offroad vehicle on the world’s most difficult road racing track much less drift it through Schwalbenschwanz.
