A Tribute to the Shelby Cobra and the Driver Car

This episode of Big Muscle on Drive is a casual tribute to the Shelby Cobra. The host spends the day driving and falling in love with a Cobra replica project car. It’s 450 hp in a 2200 pound short wheelbase chassis with a finish that doesn’t have to be worried about. It’s really nothing more profound than a call to build awesome cars and enjoy them.

Randy Grubb of Blastolene

Jay Leno's Tank Car via Popular Mechanics

Meet Randy Grubb. He’s one of the more prominent members of a collective of craftsmen known as Blastolene. You may know him as the creator of Jay Leno’s “Tank Car.” He was also a member of the Monster Garage team that created the Peterbilt Trike:

The DRIVE channel sent Matt Farah to Randy’s shop to get the story behind Blastolene. I found it interesting because he’s a craftsman of the highest degree. The video opens with Randy talking about how there are certain things that cannot be compromised which means they simply take as long as they take to build no matter how long that may be. It’s something that we are beginning to lose sight of in the modern age of mass production of bland goods designed to offend the least amount of the masses as possible. Randy Grubb doesn’t let anything stop him from building things to the level of completion that satisfies his creative vision for his projects. The Decoliner, an RV converted to look and drive like a retro cruise ship, is a perfect example of this uncompromising craftsmanship. You can drive it normally from inside the cabin, but the beauty behind the Decoliner is that you can also drive it from the roof so that it feels like you’re piloting a yacht on land. It’s more ridiculously awesome than you are picturing it to be in your head right now:

Porsche Classic Shop

The Drive Channel got an inside look at the Porsche Classic Shop in Germany. They work exclusively on Porsche road cars. What makes it interesting is that the Classic Shop stocks parts for the vintage cars made from the same supply chain that made the original factory parts. They also employ and consult with many of the workers that built the cars on the assembly line when they were being made new. You can order Classic Shop parts for your car from any Porsche dealership or you can send your car to them for an official restoration to increase its value.

Trackside with American Le Mans at Laguna Seca

The Drive Channel released another video of what I call Motorsport Music. There’s no commentary, it’s just the natural sounds of racing. It starts in the morning with the teams and crews preparing for the start of the race and then goes to various parts along the track to watch the cars go by. There’s even a few shots of the famed Corkscrew. It makes for great background music while you work.

Who Needs Music When You Have Motorsport?

These are trackside videos presented without background music and without commentary. It’s just the pure essence of racing and race cars. I recommend playing these videos in the background instead of your music. The first video is a compilation of clips from the 12 Hours of Sebring. It starts with a pit crew practicing their stops and then moves to different spots on the track during the race. It’s kind of interesting listening for the distinctive exhaust tones of the Ferraris, Porsches and Corvettes.

The second video is of the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 doing some track testing. All you hear is the magnificent roar of the 6.2 liter V8. It’s one of the best sounding engines that is currently on sale.
