GM Announces the LT1 – Motor Trend

Big news out of General Motors today with the announcement of the new LT1 V8 that will be replacing the venerable LSx family of engines in the next Corvette. The 6.2 liter V8 makes 450 horsepower and 450 ft-lbs of torque and is projected to get 26 mpg in the C7 thanks to cylinder deactivation and direct injection. Interestingly enough, GM was able to improve the gas mileage by increasing the displacement, not reducing it. The larger 6.2 liter engine means a 3.1 liter V4 when the engine is running in cylinder deactivation mode. The V4 makes enough power that it can be used more often in the engine’s duty cycle which reduced the overall consumption of the engine. V8 power only when you need it. Very clever. Head over to Motor Trend’s article to read up on all of the details with pictures and dyno videos of the new engine.

2012 Morgan 3 Wheeler – Motor Trend

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago takes the funky Morgan 3 Wheeler out for a spin. It’s essentially a giant torpedo body powered by a big Harley Davidson style motor. You get the openness of a motorcycle with a bit of vintage fighter plane swag. Carlos says he adores the car because it makes everybody happy. I don’t know. I can think of a lot of better ways to spend $45,000 on cars/motorcycles that actually handle well. Like it or hate it, the 3 Wheeler still makes for a fascinating review.

Motor Trend’s Jessi Lang Learns to Drift From Ken Gushi

Jessi Lang was more or less the pretty face that Motor Trend brought in to read the news and do interviews for their YouTube video series. Kudos to her for being enthusiastic about her job and getting more involved. Jessi’s latest episodes on the Motor Trend channel have been about her getting involved and learning some different aspects of motorsports. Here she’s learning the basics of drifting from Formula D star Ken Gushi. They start off in a stock Scion FR-S and then they go for a ride in Ken’s fully prepped race car.

Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster on the Mille Miglia – Motor Trend

The Motor Trend YouTube channel continues to impress me with how well they present truly interesting content. On this episode of Epic Drives, Angus Mackenzie pays tribute to fellow Brit Stirling Moss’s victory in the Mille Miglia in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. He drives some of the same roads in the car from the current Mercedes lineup that best resembles the car that Moss drove, the SLS Roadster. The video takes a look at both cars, the history and significance of the race and why Stirling Moss’s victory was so special. They even get Moss to drive the SLS for part of the course and interview him at the end. I do not envy the writer who has to follow this masterpiece on the next episode of Epic Drives.
