EV West E36 M3 Qualifying and Practice at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2012

EV West just posted these videos of their 700 hp E36 M3 race car qualifying and practicing for this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC). The course is split into three sections to allow the drivers to pre-run the course before competition day. Qualifying is done based on their time for the lower section. It turns out the car was making too much power which was causing some powerslides on corner exit. The team derated the controller to help with traction.

Part 1: Qualifying the on the lower section. The motor controller cut out for 30 seconds right off the bat, but then it fires up again without any problems. The alarm is required for electric cars so that the people out on course can hear the car coming.

Ford Escort MK2 Rally Cars by Dave Jenkins

I’ve always thought of the Ford Escort MK2 as the European version of the Toyota AE86. Both cars are small, light and rwd with a solid axle and a rev-happy four cylinder engine. The MK2 and AE86 have both achieved cult following due to their successful formula for a fun, basic car that you can drive totally sideways. This is the story of former rally driver, Dave Jenkins, and his new business venture converting road going MK2 Escorts into top class historic rally cars.

Toyota Corolla WRC Documentary

This is another vintage YouTube gem of a video. It’s a late 90’s documentary that follows Toyota Team Europe (TTE) as they build the AE101 based Toyota Corolla WRC to replace the ST205 Celica GT-Four. You get a great inside look at a world R&D process from component testing to wind tunnels and finally having the drivers put the car through its paces in different environments. The narration is in Japanese, but all of the interviews with the TTE staff are in English.

2012 Global Rallycross Championship Round 4 – New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Round 4 of the 2012 Global Rallycross Championship had the most creative track so far in the season. There was a couple speed bump jumps, chicanes, a gap jump, a tabletop jump and even a slanted hairpin. They also incorporated a sandpit as well as the usual car wash for traction changes. Things got interesting in the later heats as more and more of the sand was dragged over the rest of the course including onto the hairpin. GRC continues to deliver exciting racing.
