The Chibikart

The Chibikart is the brainchild of Charles Guan, a student going for his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He’s been tinkering with robots since 2000 when he was inspired by the Battle Bots tournaments. The Chibikart is the latest of his collection of awesome projects. It’s driven by 4 custom wound hub motors in 100mm skate wheels.

In the center of the frame is a 300 watt-hour battery pack made by A123 Systems which is a company started by an MIT professor. They supply lithium-ion batteries for a lot of high performance R&D electric vehicles, the Fisker Karma and the upcoming Chevy Spark.

Charles estimates the kart will hit 21 mph with him on it, but has yet to do any top speed trials. It definitely looks like it has some pep in the hooning video:

You should definitely head over to Charles’s blog called E To The Pi Plus One to see all of the details on the build of the Chibikart and his other projects.

Russel Sutton’s 9 Cylinder Radial Engine

Russel Sutton's Radial Engine

The Kneeslider motorcycle blog has been featuring this radial engine project by Russel Sutton of Australia. He has always loved radial engines and he needed something for his airboat, so he decided to build one using V6 Holden Commodore pistons and cylinders from Honda XR600’s. The engine has 8 liters of displacement and will redline at 4000rpm. The cylinders of air cooled engines are removable since they don’t have coolant passages that link them with the rest of the engine. Sutton machined the crank, rods and crank case with oiling system himself. Head over to The Kneeslider, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5 for more pictures and specs. Part 4 has YouTube videos of Russel explaining and testing the oiling system.

How to Build a Chevelle in One Day by Car Craft

The guys who work at Car Craft Magazine had the crazy idea to build a car in one day. They wanted to show that it doesn’t have to take several years and a huge budget to create a respectable street machine that you can be proud of and have fun in. The best part about this video is that they have to deal with a couple of strange issues on their Craigslist car and make some bonehead mistakes just like you and I would. In the end, they accomplish their mission and end up with a pretty awesome ’72 Chevelle. It’s also kind of funny that they park it in front of the Motor Trend long term Chevy Volt for the YouTube preview image.
