The World’s Fastest Hybrid Part 2

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago is back with the second installment of his quest to set the record for the fastest production hybrid at the Bonneville Salt Flats. In part 1 the guys took the first turbo hybrid for sale in the US, the Volkswagen Jetta hybrid, and prepped it for the Bonneville with racing and safety equipment. The 1.4 liter turbo engine and electric motor were tuned for a combined output of 300 horsepower at 30 pounds of boost. At the time, the Jetta broke the existing record but was ineligible due to the fact that it hadn’t hit production yet. This time around the car was legal and the team had made some tweaks including a lower ride height and smaller wheels to get even more top speed out of it. Check out the video to see how if they were able to officially get the speed record.

727 Cubic Inches and Australian Tire Smoke

This episode of Hot Rod Magazine’s Road Kill embodies the reason I have an “Australian Car Culture” category here on the blog. The guys travel to Australia to check out the Powercruise events organized by a man named Gup. They’re basically a celebration of Australia’s love of the burnout. The Powercruise gives folks an excuse to annihilate tires and drag race at tracks all over the country. Gup also lets Finnegan and Freiburger play around in his 1974 “Elvis” Holden HQ and his 1,275 horsepower 2006 Holden HSV VE Clubsport R8 (the car we got as a Pontiac G8) with a 727 cubic inch Hemi built by Sonny Leonard. There’s also a 1500 cubic inch semi truck that smokes all four of its rear tires doing a doughnut at one point in this video. Stay tuned after the credits for 4 extra minutes of burnout competition footage.

2013 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR-1

GM is rumored to be debuting the all-new 2014 C7 Chevrolet Corvette at the Detroit Auto Show in January to be on sale summer or fall 2013. To celebrate the end of the C6 dynasty, Car and Driver’s Technical Editor, Michael Austin, rounds up the best of the special editions for a fond tribute. He rounds up the 505 horsepower Z06 and the 628 horsepower ZR-1 for some exercise around the track while talking about what makes each car so special.

Yves Rossy – The Jetman

It’s generally a safe assumption that when a person chooses a career as a pilot that he or she loves to fly. Yves Rossy is a pilot for a Swiss airline and he loves to fly. The thing that makes Yves special is that one day he decided that flying planes was not enough. He wanted to fly like a bird. That’s when the Jetman project was born. The idea was to build a rigid carbon fiber wing that Rossy could wear on his back. It would also house four high-end remote control airplane turbines that burned kerosene to produce 22 pounds of thrust each. The fuel tank inside the wing holds enough fuel for 8 minutes of flight time. Yves purposely left control surfaces out of his design. His body would act like the wing’s fuselage so that he could use his head, arms and legs to control his flight. Jetman is very literal name for his project. So far Rossy has flown across the English Channel, raced a rally car on Top Gear and flown in the Grand Canyon among many other successful flights. His future ambitions for the Jetman project are to train another pilot for some formation flying and to be able to take off from the ground.

Tim Cameron’s Game Changer

Tim Cameron is one of the guys who hangs with the group high power tube buggy rock bouncers associated with the Southern Rock Racing Series. He recently unveiled his newest rig, the Game Changer. It’s powered by a GM Performance LSx 454 Crate Engine that makes 620 horsepower running through a built Powerglide transmission and a monster truck transfer case to custom Dana 80 axles. The way Tim and the other Rock Bouncers drive is super abusive on parts that are otherwise bulletproof in regular 4×4 applications. Here’s a walk-around of Game Changer with Tim explaining all of the breakage points he tried to eliminate:

All the talk of abuse may seem a little crazy while seeing Game Changer stationary in the middle of a field. Here’s some footage of Tim using it for its intended purpose to put things into perspective. He really has built one of the most extreme off-road vehicles in the world.
