Toyota FT-86 Vehicle Stability Control Demonstration

The Toyota FT-86 (aka the Toyota GT-86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ) has three stages of Vehicle Stability Control: on, sport and off. These guys get to try out all of the settings on the skid pad at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The facility has a water barrier slalom similar to the one they have at the Porsche Experience Center. Thankfully the three settings are all quite different and will be pretty useful.

Green Cars of the 2012 Le Mans

The “green” race cars participating in this year’s Le Mans got together for a good old fashioned photo-op. Moving from left to right we start with the Nissan Deltawing. It’s half the weight and aerodynamic drag of a normal race car so it only needs half the power and fuel. The blue and white car is the Toyota TS030 which ended up not competing in Le Mans due to a heavy crash in testing. It’s powered by a gasoline V8 on the rear axle and electric motors on the front. The silver and red car behind the Toyota is the Audi E-tron Quattro. It’s rear axle is powered by a diesel V8 with electric motors powering the front axle. The interesting aspect of the Audi is that it uses the electromagnetic flywheel energy storage system that’s been campaigned on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS Hybrid. The black and orange car on the end is the hydrogen powered GreenGT H2.

European AE86 Time Trial

This is some pretty amazing footage of a Toyota AE86 from a European time trial event. The course looks extremely challenging which emphasizes the driver’s skill and the fact that the car is set up very well. This car was produced by Toyota in the mid 80’s and is the spiritual successor to the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ.

European FT-86 Launch Videos

These are the European launch videos for the Toyota GT-86 / Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ. They go into the development of the car more than any of the American promotional videos I’ve seen.

Part 1: Engine Development. The 2.0 liter boxer engine is perfectly square with 86mm bore and 86mm stroke. It uses both direct and port injection.

Part 2: Design. The design of the FT-86 follows the philosophy of functional shapes. The classic Toyota 2000GT was also used an inspiration while the car was in the clay modeling phase.
