This is footage from the 2009 Sema show of Piss’d Off Pete, a 1960 Peterbilt Hot Rod Truck built by Randy Grubb for Jay Leno. It’s got a twin supercharged 14 liter two stroke diesel V12 that makes 500 hp and over 1000 ft-lbs of torque.
Adam Carolla’s Car Cast got a behind the scenes look at Mike Ryan’s Freightliner rally/drifting truck. Mike Ryan has been the powerhouse in big rig racing up Pikes Peak and the Mt. Washington hill climb for the past several years. He also does most of big rig stunt driving you see in movies including the chase scene in Terminator 2. Some of Carolla’s commentary is kind of stupid and he goes off with a completely irrelevant and inappropriate story at the end, but they do get some good shots of the truck. It’s got a Detroit Diesel 60 series engine with a custom Borg-Warner compound turbo setup making 1950hp and 3400+ ft-lbs of torque. It weighs almost 10,000 pounds despite of the aluminum frame rails. The rear axle is a 3-link with a Watts link and the brakes have liquid cooling.
This is the big rig Gymkhana video that Mike released a while back if you want to see the truck in action:
He also competed in the Mt. Washington hill climb rally last year in the Freightliner. It’s a similar event to Pikes Peak in that part of the course is tarmac and part of it is dirt. The footage is pretty jaw-dropping.
I came across this project on Ebay Motors a couple of weeks ago and it was too awesome not to share. It’s a hot rod based on a full sized industrial truck. From what I can tell, it’s powered by … Continue reading →
This is an absolutely fascinating video posted by Drive on YouTube. They got an exclusive inside look at the Audi Le Mans racing program as they tested their new 2012 cars at Sebring. Audi will be fielding two cars this year, the R18 E-Tron Quattro and the R18 Ultra. Both cars use a V6 direct injection diesel engine to drive the rear axle. The only difference is that the E-Tron Quattro also has an electric motor that drives the front axle. For energy storage, the E-Tron is using the magnetic flywheel system that Porsche has been developing with the Williams F1 team in their 911 GT3 RS Hybrid endurance racer. Drive does an amazing job providing footage of the car as well as interviews with the drivers about how the cars have changed throughout the years and interviews with the team leaders about development of the cars as well as Audi’s Le Mans program.
Check out this amazing video of a diesel powered dragster laying down a 7.62 quarter mile. It’s powered by an International DT466 inline 6 engine that is similar to the one that was probably under the hood of the school buses you rode in as a kid. It’s similar except for the three gigantic turbochargers that are on this one. The title has a typo, the car makes 300 hp, not 3000. It’s still a pretty impressive sight. I always wanted to do a diesel project at some point. It seemed to be a legitimate reason to buy a turbocharger that was significantly bigger than my own head.
